Film & Book Reviews

All my role models for how to live my life or how to be a woman in the world came from fictitious women, women who I adored and hoped that I would grow up and be like them. Women like (and please don’t laugh…) – Ann of Green Gables, Pollyanna, Jo March (Little Women) and… Scarlet O’hara.

I know, I know, its ridiculous that a girl growing up in the early ’60 in Israel would find role models in girls and women, who most of them lived in the 19th century in the USA, but what can I do, that’s how addicted I was to books.

For me books were my friends, teachers and the world I lived in. I used to say – Friends can betray you, but not books.

I grew up in a small village where the main attraction was the cinema. My grandfather was addicted to the silver screen. That small cinema would be his escape from his hard and demanding life as a farmer. He would go to the cinema 3 or 4 times a week and would take me with him.

Do you remember the amazing movie “Cinema Paradiso”?, well, that was my world. The movies that my grandfather and me saw would not have been called even B-Movie and in many times would tear in the middle of the screening, but for us it was … MAGIC . This was my initiation into the world of movies.

Since then a lot has changed, but one thing remained, I’m still addicted to books and movies (less to TV even though today TV has started producing some great movies), but I’m still “old school” so films whether on DVD or streaming is my favorite way of spending an evening or a weekend (double-feature).

I was inspired by Dave Backer and his monumental challenge of reviewing 2,500 movies to start reviewing the DVD and Blue-ray collection we have at home. That would not break his record for sure, but would certainly account for a share amount of cinema fanatics.

From time to time I would also add my book reviews of the latest books I’ve read. I’ve been reading a book per week, for the last 45 years, so I guess that would match up for his record, but to be honest, many of them were professional books, so I would skip those and only stick with the non-fiction.

There is no order or logic to the film I review, it’s simply what felt right for my hubby and me that evening to watch. I’ll try and guess what would have been the tagline for the movie and then include a brief synopsis of the movie, finally I will add a paragraph or two on my reaction to the film. The standard “What I liked about it”, and “What I think could have been improved”.

I welcome each and every one of you to leave a comment on what you thought about the movie, if you saw it, or whether you would be watching it, if you hadn’t seen it yet.

So, without further adieu… Let the journey begin…
